Mage of No Renown is a perfectly paced coming of age story with compelling characters, an elemental magic system, intriguing mysteries, and tension filled action. Bear with me as I get my rambling thoughts together. It feels like it’s been such a long time since I’ve done a review. If we do not fight for that which we love, it will be taken from us. “Battle is not just about destruction, Wesson. (Or between King’s Dark Tidings book 4 and 5) This book can be read as a standalone novel or a prequel. This new enemy is sent by a mysterious foe, one who will force Wesson to choose between the kindness in his heart and the seductive power in his soul. As he wrestles with his training, an assassin stalks his every move. He must learn control over the power he wields or risk being consumed by it.
Forced to flee a murderous mob, Wesson stumbles onto a tumultuous path where he must confront the destructive power he has awakened. The sinister power bursts free during a confrontation with an old enemy, and Wesson’s tranquil life is left in tatters.
One would be forgiven for thinking the story predictable, but the author has an unusual way of churning up the norm and making it look extraordinary.Wesson is still years from becoming a man when an immense darkness stirs within his core. The story deals with some typical fantasy themes: love, loyalty, bravery, evil, and good. Events in the book start out slow and steady and only slightly ups their pace in the final fourth or so of the book. Combined with an increasingly complex magic system, it makes for a thoroughly enjoyable read. A mark of truly good characters is when readers begin to feel actual emotions for these characters regarding their fate, and this book displays that. There’s a lot of character development in this book. The main character is almost perfect, but it’s all balanced out by the numerous flaws in the other characters. The story is somewhat typical, but it’s set out in a very unusual way that makes it very hard to predict. Kel Kade has managed to create a very cool kind of fantasy here, a kind of fantasy that is just as thematically oriented as the Sword of Truth series but still possesses many of the elements of modern, swashbuckling fantasy.
